Decision due on traveller site consultation
Residents look set to have their say on 15 locations in Mansfield district that have been identified as potentially suitable sites for gypsies, travellers and travelling showpeople.
A report has been published ahead of Mansfield District Council's Full Council meeting on 16 July, which seeks the council's agreement to hold a consultation.
Subject to approval, a public consultation will take place from 19 July to 13 September. Workshops will be held over the summer in Mansfield, Mansfield Woodhouse and Warsop, where members of the public can find out further information and share their views.
Consultation workshops will take place on these dates:
Wednesday 24 July in the Council Chamber at the Civic Centre, Mansfield, from 1pm to 7pm;
Monday 2 September at the Turner Hall in Mansfield Woodhouse from 1pm to 7pm;
Thursday 5 September at Warsop Town Hall from 1pm to 7pm.
The Housing Act 2004 requires all local authorities to assess the accommodation needs of gypsies, travellers and travelling showpeople, and have a strategy for how those housing needs will be met.
A total of four sites are required in Mansfield district - a permanent one with three pitches, a transit/emergency stopping site to accommodate up to 15 caravans and associated vehicles, and two sites for travelling showpeople.
Following initial consultation last summer, 122 sites were considered and scored against specific criteria including viability and sustainability. When assessing sites lots of factors had to be considered such as impact on the environment, proximity to public transport, health services, education and provision of utilities.
Of these, 15 sites are considered potentially suitable and will be consulted on. As part of the consultation, members of the public can suggest additional sites in the district that might be suitable.
No decisions have been made about which of the 15 sites are preferred but they are ranked according to their viability and further work will be required to determine whether sites are actually feasible. Work is continuing to contact all landowners.
The council's Planning and Housing teams will consider how the sites could be managed.
